Michigan District Convention
The Michigan District Convention was held on Sunday,November 3, at SS. Peter & Paul Orthodox Cathedral in Detroit. The meeting was attended by 13 members of the District. It was mentioned that none of the other OCA churches in the Detroit area were interested in forming a FOCA chapter. A lot of the members of these parishes were once members of the organization, but had no interested in rejoining. Also, in the past two years there has been a drop of 12 members in the District (6 just stopped being a member and 6 fell asleep in the Lord). Much of the discussion centered on whether to continue as a District since there is only one chapter in the District. The fact that there is only one chapter, the cost of sending a Governor to the national meetings, the lack of interest by most of the membership in participating in meeting or activities, whether anyone was interested in becoming the Governor, and the confusion as to whether it is a chapter or district activity/meeting were stated as reasoning for disbanning the district and just keeping the one chapter. The discussion favoring keeping the District centered around the chapter would be assigned to another District (Ohio or Midwest) by the Executive Board, the fact that disbanning the District would make it hard to reactivate it in the future, and how attractive it would be for others to join the Fellowship in Michigan if we did not have a District. After this discussion a motion was made to continue as the Michigan District for another year, and to try in the coming year to become more active as both the District and chapter. A committee for Public Relations was formed with Sandra Fisher as
chairperson. The following were elected as Michigan District officers for the coming year:
Governor - Jennifer Pishko
Lt. Governor - Larissa Kuprianiak
Secretary - Richard Tymoc
Treasurer - Nettie Jury
Fr. Michael Simerick agreed to continue as Spiritual Advisor for both the chapter and the District.
The meeting adjourned with the installation of the officers being set for the last Sunday in November
after Liturgy at SS. Peter & Paul Cathedral in Detroit.
